Microsoft Office will be uninstalled on my PC on 10/23.
If all goes as planned, Windows will be replaced by Ubuntu on 10/24.
Sure, the Google phone isn’t as sexy as the Iphone. Open source isn’t supposed to be sexy. Just free and awesome.

I will be so very interested to hear what you have to say about these applications, and how you do with them.
Keep on writing Eric.

Oh it will be, I promise, especially for real estate agents ( see: “Compass Mode” ). Another real estate specific thing the G1 can do, that the iPhone cannot, is run concurrent apps and still make calls.
While I did have some hands on time with a G1 one last week, I too am waiting for mine.
You can download the emulator from Google Code as an opportunity for us to become familiar with the GUI. I also have the Users Manual if anyone wants it. DM me on Twitter.

I’ve had my iPhone for about a month and have loved every minute of it. Totally changes the way I think about a cellular device. I was a loyal Crackberry user, but, no more.
I will say that the whole carrier exclusivity thing is really dumb. The G1 might be great, but T-Mobile is a major FAIL in my area.

Eric Bramlett says:
The great thing about Android is that it’s an OS and so will not be limited to any one carrier. T-mobile’s G3 service is extremely limited, and I don’t blame you for staying away from it. Give it some time and you’ll have solid gphone options in your area.
In case anyone missed this…here’s a funny gphone v iphone comparison.

Ubuntu? Open Office?
You’ll be back. I’ll give it 3 mos. I lasted 6 and I knew Linux.

Robert, I’m running Ubuntu and Open Office on my laptop for almost a year. Can’t see going back to Windows for now. Beginning to question if it can replace my Mac. IMO, Ubuntu is very close to being ready for prime time.

I’ll wait for version 2 or at least a maintenance release. This thing was rushed out the door.

Eric, Eric, Eric,
Up until I bought my first iphone last year I had a Treo 700 and hated every minute of talk time! My iphone changed my life! I’d say it’s almost as much fun as my wife but I’d get into big trouble on this end! I did give my wife my old iphone and bought the new one. Just ask Eric Blackwell how he love his new iphone. By the way, Umbuntu? The first time you hit a snag you’ll be back!

Eric Bramlett says:
I’m a little nervous about Ubuntu, but Office is gone. I won’t be installing Open Office, either. Google Docs + Google Calendar do everything I need. The only thing holding me back in the past was syncing my blackberry to contacts & outlook. Android fixes all that b/c it automatically syncs with google mail, contacts, & calendar any time it’s on.

@Todd –
How is parallels on Ubuntu working out for you?
October 7, 2008 — 6:23 am
Todd Carpenter says:
Which Todd? I don’t use parallels. I have a Mac desktop, an Ubuntu desktop, and a laptop that can boot XP or Ubuntu, though Widows hasn’t been up in months. My fourth computer is my iPhone.
I love Google Docs, but use Open Office to do presentations, and keep a feel vital docs that I might need regardless of an Internet connection.
I have a hard time seeing why 75% of the population wouldn’t be perfectly satisfied with Open Office.

Mine comes on the 22nd as well, I have been waiting forever for it! Did you see the list of the Anroid developer challenge finalists? See them at: http://code.google.com/android/adc_gallery/ , they look awesome.
In regards to Ubuntu and OpenOffice, you’ll be just fine. However, a few things I should point out. I run the I.T. for our company and have come across a few common open source hiccups for RE purposes:
1)Firefox is not loved by quite a few RE product vendors. I forgot the exact ones, but this has been the reason why I still need to leave IE icons on our desktops.
2)OpenOffice is ‘different’ is our number 1 complaint.
3)The second most common complaint is users have trouble adjusting(or finding) the mail merge feature. It is there though, and some of our office admins have been successful with it.
4)And one thing I have noticed is there is no right click thesarus feature in Open Office.
The only complaint I personally have about the Linux environment is the diagramming applications are a 5th as useful as MS Visio.
Just my two cents, enjoy the adventure, it’s great fun!

@Steve –
That’s the first I’ve looked at the developer challenge. Man, it’s exciting! There are already some cool apps, and there will be tons more coming down the pipe!
