Greg,
You are a man of exceptional taste.
La Soledad is their gold standard–the cello simply ethereal beauty.
And I expect Mr. Kempe to comment as well, Pink Martini being another great product of Portland.
(Memo to Barry Cunningham and Tower Records: There could be some supplantation going on in music sales.)
I played Eugene, La Soledad, Amado Mio, all kinds of stuff. I got stuck on Que Sera Sera, which gets Pink Martinized into a hauntingly PoMo Hungarian waltz. (And I have now officially said something positive about Post Modernism!)
Truly amazingly robustly complex pop music — a tour de force.
Greg, take the trip, go see them! Buy their CDs. Different from almost anything you’ve heard.
Rob, not only are they from Portland, but Brian Davis and Derek Reith (both percussion) have played with our choir on a half dozen occasions. (And terrific people.) Until you’ve heard djembe, congas, cow bell and gourd in 9/8 time you haven’t lived…

I confess I knew nothing about them until yesterday. They’re coming to the Rialto Theater in Tucson, and I was intrigued enough by the description to go check them out on Youtube.

I highly recommend seeing them in a small indoor venue.
Try Dosvedonya Mio Bombino–a Russian living in Italy who is unsure where he belongs.
If you like Pink Martini, check out Paris Combo-similar music led by a Parisian mademoiselle with sultry jazz chops.
