I heard from Brian Brady, who also seems to have escaped harm in the fires. His home came closest to being singed, and, while he has not yet been back to see it, he thinks it should be okay.
The podcast linked below is a free-ranging discussion of the fires, the response by individual citizens, and the kinds of structures that might replace those that were destroyed by the fires.

It’s nice to hear voices.
You bring up an interesting point about protecting your own property. Florida deals with this during hurricane season as folks know that if they evacuate, they might not be ‘allowed’ to go back until gov’t says okay. So they ignore mandatory evacuations, and wait out the hurricanes just to keep immediate ownership of their own property.
Perhaps laws have changed that residents no longer need to do that, and someone in FL is better able to comment, but I’ve always found the balance between safety, gov’t control, and individual property ownership during crisis to be an interesting one.
