Am I the only one who thinks that the Carnival idea has run its course? I am underwhelmed. What used to be a celebration of excellence, or at the very least, solid writing and message, has become a regurgitation of whatever happens to be submitted during a particular week. I’m just sayin’…

I agree with you. There is some kind of a cut, because there will be 30 or 40 entries, typically. But after that, lately it’s been The Special Olympics: Everyone’s a winner! This is never more annoying to me than when, like last week, I hit the ball all the way out of the park and into the next park. I’m not always that good, but, when I am, I want the credit I’ve earned. Same for you. When you’re objectively better, I want for the world to be told in no uncertain terms about your immeasurable genius.
At Jeff Brown’s request, we stopped submitting to the Carnival of Real Estate Investing. If y’all feel the same way about the Carnival or Real Estate, I’m listening. Alternatively, if David and Drew have any ideas, I’m listening that way, too.

I do not even view them (the carnivals) anymore. The only reason I looked at this post was simple, because it had two comments and I enjoy reading the comments!
As many times as I have submitted articles to the various carnivals and been featured, I only averaged like 2 hits. The only major traffic I got from the carnivals were when I hosted and I got like 32 hits maybe? Not worth my time.

I’ll hang my chad – I fully support sending our regrets in the future. It is a shame, really. And, it’s not about the hits but about the potential for exposing (and exposure to) great, otherwise overlooked ideas and perspectives.

Indeed. Cathy and I talked about this earlier. One thing we could do is simply take it upon ourselves: As with The Odysseus Medal category, we could each one of us cite great posts we see out in the world. We lose that canonical idea of (albeit subjective) “best”, but we would gain the freedom of going where we wither, even outside the RE.net.
From a traffic POV, when we link to something other people find interesting, we can throw off a hundred clicks in a single day, many more through time.

Greg-
Sorry I didn’t see these comments sooner (I know – I’m slacking). Do you think hosts are not doing a strong enough job of selecting a clear winner of the week? How could we improve in your opinion?

Kris-
Regarding your thought that the carnival is “a regurgitation of whatever happens to be submitted during a particular week” — the carnival is meant to showcase the prior week’s best posts. I hear from many bloggers that they enjoy reading through the posts highlighted on the carnival every Monday. Personally, I read many, many blog posts every week, but there is still content I don’t see — and I like the summary of the best of the best every Monday. The carnival receives 30+ submissions almost every week and, aside from the 1st couple carnivals in mid-2006, I don’t remember a host posting all the submissions as that week’s carnival.
I don’t suppose you are confusing the weekly carnival edition with the weekly “link post” that I post on the actual CoRE blog? I’m certainly open to not posting the link posts, but I thought the general consensus was that people liked them. I’m all ears.

just an FYI (though I’m guessing you already saw it) – the CoRE blog is now open for the carnival community to contribute to — http://www.carnivalofrealestate.com/the-carnival-to-become-a-destination-for-all-things-relating-to-real-estate-blogging/2007/06/
