Ouch.
We were on pace for a huge day (the luck of Prince Hal) when GoDaddy.com clobbered us for three hours. This is the third outage in about a week, and nothing we have done on GoDaddy’s end addresses the glacial slowness of the site when we’re busy — which is only about 18 hours a day.
Drew Nichols has offered to host us for free, which I cannot permit. But I sure can pay the man for hosting. I’ll research this on my own, but if anyone has experience migrating a WordPress weblog (specifically the MySQL databases), I’d love to hear from you.
My apologies if you were trying and failing to get here between around 4pm and 7pm MST.

Greg,
I would suggest that you find a small to mid-sized ISP in Phoenix to host with.
I find that local service providers (where I am a big dog) provide much better services than companies such as GoDaddy. I say that in spite of the fact that I have 6 client sites at GD.
If you want a check list for selecting a webhosting provider, then send me an email.

I was wondering what was going on… My RSS Feeds weren’t loading..etc”..
As you may know, Greg, I recently switched from BlueHost to HostGator.. I had a “myriad” of problems with BlueHost that they (expecially the CEO of the company, Matt Heaton, hopefully NOT the same Matt Heaton who heads up “ActiveRain”, because if it is the same guy, “ActiveRain” just lost ALL credibility with me…)chose to ignore.. Among them..
1. Unexplained Slowdowns, it would take forever for my blog to load.. over 3 minutes, which is a lifetime in “blogland”…
2. Horrible customer service. Hold times of over a half hour, etc.. Inept, “foreign speaking” morons whom I couldn’t UNDERSTAND what they were saying.. If I understood, at least that would be one less headache.. Bad advice which screws my blog content and pages and then I had to go on another hold time of over 2 hours just to request a backup be restored to fix THEIR mistakes!
3. For more, read here…

PS.. I’m “BatBoy”.. See, some of the commentors were sacrastic, quick to blame the general public, with this “the public is dumb” attitude”…
4. I copied every post I made by copying and pasting everything onto an OpenOffice Word file.. As for content, like pictures and podcasts, I had them anyway. Then I emailed YOU Greg, and you referred me to Drew Nichols..
5. Well, Drew called me, but after 10 minutes on the phone he didn’t seem to want my business.. Maybe he thought I was a nut and didn’t want to deal with me. Who knows? My feelings aren’t hurt if all I want is GOOD DEPENDABLE SERVICE WITH NO CRAP…I am getting that now! How is GoDaddy treating you, Greg? I knew I didn’t want to go with GoDaddy from the onset because they don’t have Fantastico.., and they seem to give you a pretty crappy deal in general… Drew, however, did tell me to check out HostGator.. I tried someone else for 1 day, realized they were garbage, and went to HostGator. Very good company. I haven’t had ONE problem yet!
6. It took me 4 days to restructure my blog, and I did everything by hand. However, it’s only me and my wife. Your Blog is considerably more complex. I tried to use the WordPress Backup-Restore Plugin and I couldn’t change the settings to make the thing word. Maybe you could…Who knows? All in all, it’s a project..
7. I also found a chance to clean up some posts and stuff I had in doing this. You can’t imagine the waste you find when you undertake a project like this. One positive change, by the way, was that some people were telling me that with BlueHost, my site was being blocked as a “porm site” when they tried accessing the site through their workplace! No problems at all like that with HostGator.
Greg, I gave you a lot to read, and I have appointments. I will check in later… ALWAYS GOOD Talking to you!
Jim

You have my sympathies. Managing domain names is about all GoDaddy can handle semi-professionally.
I recently had to switch a group of ecommerce sites I manage, and finding a host I was comfortable with at a reasonable price was more challenging than I thought. After reading through hundreds of postings on the topic on WebmasterWorld, I settled on pair.com. Smooth sailing so far…
The WordPress move shouldn’t be too bad. Other than host-specific tweaks, it should be as simple as copying the filesystem and dumping/recreating the database using phpmyadmin.
Good luck!

I use Yahoo webhosting. No problems for all three years. Perfect uptime forr me, as far as I know. They also have all sorts of editing & management tools that let you work on the web site without an FTP client. Nice for when you are out of town. They support WordPress, and will even install/maintain it for newbies.

Moved my wordpress blog a couple months ago without a hitch. Of course, that was possible because I had nothing to do with it. 🙂
I’m now hosted by a guy in Vancouver who was recommended to me by my manager.
Any time I’ve wanted a change or even had a question, I’ve been able to email or phone Sean Robinson who takes care of me immediately. One time for example, I needed a button added. About 3-4 minutes after we hung up I had an email saying it was done – and it was, exactly as I’d asked for.
Relatively speaking my blog is lightning fast, and has never given me a minute of irritation.
