I’m not sure what the bigger sin is: loving that movie or loving that outtake. I just know that it’s wrong…very wrong

I’m obviously kidding

“Glen Gary, Glen Ross” stinks, but who in sales doesn’t own it? “Boiler Room,” too. Too much wrong, but plenty that’s dead right anyway. I thought ths was a brilliant re-cut.

Hi, Greg…
I’m back to BloodhoundBlog often. I thoroughly enjoy your writing, more your perspective. You’re at least partly responsible for my starting my own real estate blog.
But – sorry – this has me baffled. After a Google search I find I’ve spent the last fifteen years not seeing “Glengarry, Glen Ross”, along with a suspected several hundred million others. You provide no context, so possibly are driving some to see what apparently is a movie validating the worst stereotypes of the profession. Doesn’t seem like a good idea.
And for those who need a dose of the profane, there’s always Amanda Marcotte or the comment section of the Huffington Post. Here it’s just not expected.
Unless I’m missing the point?
Best.

Greg ~
Why in the world are you giving this any publicity?
Interesting that I see this post after posting about Professionalism In Real Estate earlier today.

Because it’s funny.
Both Phil and Jeff: Please don’t mistake us for cheerleaders. We’re interested in a lot of different points of view, we’re not interested in anything but the truth. “The Real Estate King” in “American Beauty” makes you wince not because it’s false but because way too much of it is true. “Glen Garry Glen Ross” is a gross exagerration — of things that really happened in Florida and later in Arizona. My all-time favorite Arizona Cowboy, Sam Steiger, used to say, “Never buy a piece of land you haven’t set foot on.” Why would anyone ever have to give such obvious advice?

Hilarious!
How’s this one for laughs?

Excelllent. I loved the others in that series of commercials, but I had never seen that one.

You underestimate your impact, Greg. No, you’re not a cheerleader, but you are a leader, and I’ll bet your hit count reflects that. What BloodhoundBlog does – including and especially the diversity of opinion – it does very well; that gives you credibility.
That, however, isn’t the larger point. Humor requires context. Perhaps that clip would be funny had I seen the movie, but I haven’t, and no context was provided. Just stringing together four letter words to get a reaction ceased being funny when Lenny Bruce died, even if it’s Jack Lemmon doing the stringing.
I think the post is out of place and does more to detract from your excellence than add to it. Others, clearly, disagree.
So there you have it: diversity at its best!

You have my apologies. I assumed nearly everyone had seen the film. It’s the worst kind of naturalism, as idiotic in its way as “Death of a Salesman,” but it’s part of our cultural context even so.

This blog is on its way down if you start apologizing to every reader who is offended by what you or your contributors post. You put in a ‘Warning’ for a reason. A big draw to this blog is because it’s not PC, you all say how you feel, and that’s how I like it.
Oh…the clip was hilarious.

Greg Swann says:
Fine! I’m sorry I apologized!
But: From now on the vitally important work undertaken by the bubbleboys will be referred to as dressing their Zwinkys. A little sensitivity goes a long way…

PLENTY that’s dead right. That outtake could be a video of the last day of the month in any mortgage office.

I hear ya Greg…but so does a little humor. I’m on floor and the phone isn’t ringing much (I’m setting myself up for ‘Realtors of the World Unite’ to tell me how I can be more productive on floor). So while I tab around between bloodhound, other real estate sites, and profootballtalk, it’s nice to have a laugh and keep the day rolling. Ok I’m done; I’ll stop my bitching about the bitching.

Well you KNOW I liked it! However, I didn’t know Lenny Bruce had died. Sad to hear that, as he is still very much alive inside of my head.

I think this is definitely guy humor… sort of like making weird noises with your arm pits at the dinner table..

Re-cutting David Mamet… gotta love it! Too bad they didn’t include more of Alec Baldwin’s tirade, easily the most hilariously over-the-top part of the film.

Anyone who doesn’t like that clip, won’t like the movie either. Their loss, I say.
No apologies needed.

I hadn’t seen the movie, but I thought the clip was hilarious. I easily recognized that clips were taken and reordered to portray something else, which I think is very creative. And I also am not superstitious when it comes to certain “bad” words.
Excellent post.
